This paper investigates PTM behaviour and currency invoicing decisions of Canadian pork exporters in the presence of menu costs. It is shown that when export prices are negotiated in the exporter's currency, menu costs cause threshold effects in the sense that there are bounds within (outside of) which PTM is not (is) observed. Conversely, PTM is not interrupted by menu costs when export prices are denominated in the importer's currency. The empirical model focuses on pork meat exports from Canada to the U.S. and Japan. Hansen's (2000) threshold estimation procedure is used to jointly test for currency invoicing and PTM in the presence of menu costs. Inference is conducted using bootstrap methods. PTM effects are smaller when accounting for currency... |

The Asteraceae, one of the largest families of flowering plants, contains about 1,100 genera and 20,000 species, and is well known for its extensive karyotypic variation. In this study, conventional Feulgen staining, C-CMA3 banding, and fluorescence in situ hybridization with a 45S rDNA probe were used to determine the chromosome number and the number and physical position of GC-rich heterochromatin and 45S rDNA sites in three Asteraceae weed species (Crepis japonica, Galinsoga parviflora and Chaptalia nutans). The three species exhibited karyotype differences in the chromosome number and shape, as a commom feature of Asteraceae. However, the 45S rDNA sites always occurred on the short chromosomal arms, associated with GC-heterochromatin. Althought of... |

The term ‘cultural landscape’ is examined from the perspective of its generally accepted use in various parts of the world. Contrasts exist due to the different cultural histories, academic affiliations and to the practitioners of the concept. Presently the term appears to have greater currency and relevance to landscape planning in Europe. To provide a broad perspective, cultural landscapes are examined, from within the Eastern Deciduous Forest Biome of North America, with particular reference to the province of Ontario, Canada. Here the consequences of a landscape structure onto which human attributes of landscape have been imposed is used as a basis for comparison with the longer, organic evolution of landscape as manifest in Northwestern Europe. On January and April, 2004, 4 large oceanic puffer fish (total length 45 to 73.5 cm with body weight 1.12 to 3.2 kg) was caught by the small trammel net, off Tunisian coasts (gulf of Tunis, Monastir and Salakta) and brought into INSTM for the identification. It is a fish belonging to the family of Tetraodontidae, Lagocephalus lagocephalus (Linnaeus). This paper is dealing with the description and some measurement and meristic characters of this specie, which is not a common animal, fished by the Tunisian professional fishermen. |

This paper makes three principal contributions. First, we propose a new estimator for the unobservable variable models with endogenous causes. We show that under factor analysis type of assumptions, Robinson and Ferrara (1977)'s procedure is not fully efficient, and a more efficient procedure can be obtained by merging Robinson and Ferrara' procedure with that in Joreskog and Goldberger (1975) procedure. The asymptotic properties of the new estimator are compared with these two estimators and results indicate that, with our mixture approach, significant efficiency gains can be achieved. Second, we model the Quality of life (QOL) as an unobservable or latent link variable between observable causes and observable effects, which mitigates problem of bias,... |

The sound from a propeller-driven aircraft is largely generated by the propeller itself. Its acoustic signature consists of a series of harmonics, the lowest of which, the fundamental, is typically in the region of 100 Hz, with the higher harmonics appearing at multiples of the fundamental. Experiments have recently been conducted off the coast of southern California, using several different types of single-engine, light aircraft, which show that the first 10 or so propeller harmonics are detectable not in the atmosphere, in the water column and also on sensors buried to a depth of about 1 m in the seabed. The Doppler-shifted comb of frequencies produced by an aircraft propeller is the basis of a recently developed technique for making point measurements... |
